The Acura NSX GT3 was developed for FIA GT3 competition, debuting in 2017, where this car took the first two victories for the model in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Katherine Legge and Andy Lally achieved significant success with this #93 Acura NSX GT3 chassis 005 in 2017, securing the NSX GT3’s maiden GTD victory at Detroit's Belle Isle with Michael Shank Racing. They followed up with a consecutive win at the Six Hours of The Glen on 2 July, starting from the pole and leading much of the race at Watkins Glen. Chassis 005 is presented in the livery in which it took that second victory.
Starting from pole at Watkins Glen, Lally built a four-second lead over the course of his opening 50-minute stint and, despite a series of caution flags, the Lally/Legge Acura never dropped below fifth place.
A triple stint from Legge moved her to second place behind teammate Ozz Negri in the #86 Acura. With two hours to go, Negri and Legge continued to run 1-2. After contact sidelined the #86 car, causing a full-course caution, this #93 car stayed ahead of the field for the final 25 minute dash, taking the flag for GTD victory.
Developed from the production Acura NSX, the NSX GT3 utilizes the production NSX’s ultra-rigid and lightweight multi-material body with aluminum-intensive space frame, which is produced at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio.
The production-based 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 racing engine was also built alongside its production vehicle counterparts at the Anna Engine Plant in Ohio, USA. The racing engine uses the same design specifications as the production NSX, including the block, heads, valve train, crankshaft, pistons and dry-sump lubrication system. A six-speed, sequential-shift racing gearbox delivers power to the rear wheels. With a carbon fiber body, it weighs only 2,780 lb.
Chassis 005 was retired by MSR at the end of 2017 and campaigned by HART in IMSA in 2018. Following the 2018 season, the car was sold to Martin Barkey (MBRP founder/owner) who drove it in the 2019 SRO GT Americas series with Kyle Marcelli, winning the drivers’ championship. During the off season the car was refurbished and in 2020 it was raced in SRO GT Americas by Trent Hindman and Shelby Blackstock to the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championship titles. Before the 2022 season, the car was once again refurbished and it raced a full PRO/AM season in SRO GT Americas with Mario Farnbacher and Ashton Harrison, who also won the drivers’ and teams’ titles.
From 2017 to 2022 chassis 005 won 22 races and 3 championships, making it the first NSX GT3 to win a major internal race and the winningest chassis in NSX GT3 program history. It has been restored to 2017 specifications with the exception of the 2020 Evo handling updates to improve drivability.
In 2025, chassis 005 was purchased by HRC and disassembled and then sent to JAS in Italy for a complete restoration using new parts supplied by HRC and JAS. The restoration was completed in April 2026.
